Woman shot in hand during altercation

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A fight between a man and his stepfather escalated Sunday when the two fired guns at one another and a bullet struck the man’s mother, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

The son, Paul Wagers, 48, of London, was arrested after deputies Shawn Boroviak and Josh Scott responded after midnight to a reported shooting at a home located seven miles east of London. Once at the home, the deputies found Wagers and his stepfather fighting.

Deputies learned the two had fought and fired shots at one another before they arrived. When the son’s mother tried to intervene, she was shot in the hand.

Wagers was charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and alcohol intoxication in a public place.

The stepfather, who suffered injuries to his head and face, and the mother were airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

It has yet to be determined what caused the two men to fight, although Root said alcohol may have been a factor.

Detective Daryl Zanet continues the investigation. Assisting at the scene were Chief Deputy Eddy Sizemore, Sgt. E.R. Rudder, Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, and Bush Volunteer Fire Department.
