Hodge files for re-election

Two nearly last-minute filings boosted the number of Whitley County sheriff's candidates to five.

The two filers who slipped in before Tuesday’s deadline include incumbent Republican Whitley County Sheriff Lawrence Hodge and Jim Morgan. The two will be among five Republican candidates voters will select from during the May 18 primary.

The other candidates for sheriff are Ancil Carter, Colan Harrell and Bill Rowe.

  • 2 explosions at Boston marathon finish line

    BOSTON (AP) — Two explosions shattered the euphoria of the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday, sending authorities out on the course to carry off the injured while the stragglers in the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton were rerouted away from the smoking site of the blasts.

    Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos. Bloody spectators were being carried to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners.

    Seven persons — a man, a woman and five children — perished Saturday morning in a house fire on Sam Parker Road in the Gray community in Knox County.
    As of Saturday afternoon, the names of those who died were not identified and have not been confirmed. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene by Knox County Coroner Mike Blevins.
