A taste of New York

Hot dog stand opening in downtown Corbin today

By Ivy Brashear / Staff Writer

Downtown Corbin may not have a lot in common with the busy bustling streets of New York City, but there is one thing Corbin can say they have that is just as good as what the Big Apple has: a brand new hot dog stand.

John Coldiron moved to Corbin from California and said that he had never seen a hot dog stand in person when he came here.

“There’s nothing like this around, and I’m sitting there (at a bar) having a beer one night, and thought of the idea,” Coldiron said.

With the thought in his mind, and some encouragement from the Main Street Manager, Sharae Myers, Coldiron ordered a hot dog cart from a factory in Tennessee. He picked up the cart personally because he wanted to let the people at the factory teach him how to use it.

Coldiron has set up his cart on the edge of Nibroc Park and plans to officially start business today. He was out on the street corner doing a trial-run on Tuesday.

Coldiron said business was pretty good during his “trial-run,” he just hopes that once he posts flyers around town and word spreads, that business will soar.

“If the people support it, it will do well,” Coldiron said.

He said that he uses Nathan’s Famous hot dogs, which are the “best you can buy,” and are the same hot dogs that vendors in New York use, and they are pure beef. He has to buy them from a supplier in Knoxville, Tenn.

“We’ve got a supplier (for hot dogs), so now, we’re ready to go,” Coldiron said.

Coldiron is also planning to name his hot dog stand, “P and J Awesome Dogs,” and it will be pitched as the only one of its kind in Corbin. Hot dogs will cost $2.50 with anything you want on them, and Coldiron said their signature hot dog will be the cole slaw dog.

Coldiron said he just hopes that everyone in town gets as excited about his hot dog stand as he is.

“I hope it will catch on,” said Coldiron.
