Belk’s sale helps charities

Times-Tribune Staff Report

Saturday morning’s charity sale at Belk’s department store raised money for local charities and organizations.

Despite the wet and windy weather, volunteers with the Corbin Lions Club made funnel cakes for customers who came for the special sale from 6-10 a.m.

Lions Club President Mike Pawula estimated that the club raised about $490 from the event through food sales and “ticket” sales that gave customers $5 off any Belk’s purchase.

Other charities particiating included Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter, the Lily Volunteer Fire Department, Barbourville High School cheerleaders, Cornerstone Christian Academy, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Power Pack Ministries, Moment with the Master, Heart to Heart Ministries, Hazel Green PTO, London United Way and Girl Scouts.

Belk’s last nationwide charity sale, held Nov. 15, 2008, raised more than $4.5 million for hundreds of participating nonprofit organizations nation-wide.
