Small Business Development office to open Wednesday

Part-time facility a partnership with EKU, Corbin EDA, So. Ky. Chamber of Commerce

A new partnership between two Corbin agencies and Eastern Kentucky University will open for business this Wednesday. The office will have part-time hours to start out with, but the three groups feel the Depot Street office will make services more accessible to business owners and operators in the region.

It’s operated by the Eastern Kentucky University Small Business Development Center, or EKU-SBDC, in association with the Corbin Economic Development Agency and the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

The office is located at the Economic Development Agency-Chamber of Commerce office in the old train depot, at 101 North Depot Street in Corbin.

The new office in Corbin is part-time, and will operate beginning this Wednesday, and the first Wednesday of each month thereafter. The office will add additional days of service as the demand increases.

Part of KSBDC — the Kentucky Small Business Development Center, which helps existing and start-up businesses succeed by offering high quality, in-depth and hands on services — the new Corbin office is part of a network of 15 offices KSBDC has across the state.

Low and no-cost services available by the office in Corbin include comprehensive business planning, organizational structure, cash flow projections, record keeping, market planning and research, customer retention strategies and cash flow management.

In a recent news release, officials of the partnerships were elated with the Corbin office opening.

Bruce Carpenter, Executive Director of the Corbin Economic Development Agency said, “We are excited to partner with the EKU SBDC and bring their excellent services closer to small businesses in Corbin and surrounding communities. As an Economic Development Agency/Chamber of Commerce, growing existing businesses and promoting entrepreneurs is a valued and shared mission with the SBDC.”

“I am so happy to be able to reach more clients across the region. At times it can be hard for business to travel to SBDC offices. Rather than wait for them to come to us, we are going to them” said Michael Rodriguez, center director of the Richmond SBDC office. Both Rodriguez and John Preston, management consultant from the SBDC office in Somerset, will staff the new Corbin office.

The KSBDC is a partner program with the U. S. Small Business Development Administration SBA.
