Not only did the children at St. Camillus Academy watch “Out of the Mist...a Dragon” performed at the Conway Boatman Chapel at Union College in Barbourville on March 11, they also got to attend a special puppetry workshop given by the puppeteers from the Wood and Strings Theatre from Centerville, Tenn.
Under the guidance of Kelly Eagan, Chris Maloney, Matt Sandbank and Thom Wallace, more than 50 students in first, second and third grade created an original puppet of their own from a block of sponge.
“The definition of a puppet is an object that moves that tells a story,” said puppeteer Matt Sandbank.
And tell a story he did... throughout the two-hour puppetry workshop, he sparked the children’s imagination by showing them how the puppets can be a wonderful vehicle for personal expression. He cleverly sculpted a sponge block with scissors by “adding” and “subtracting” details to create a one-of-a-kind puppet.
This unique opportunity for the students to interact with highly trained and talented artists was sponsored by the Fine Arts Association of Southeastern Kentucky, Inc.
