Octoberfest returns

By Samantha Swindler / Managing Editor

The storm clouds may have threatened Octoberfest — but organizer Betty Comer knew it wouldn’t damper the downtown celebration.

“I told them this morning, ‘oh, ye of little faith, it isn’t going to rain today,’” Comer said. “It turned out to be a great day. We had lots of participation, everybody was so excited and we just had a wonderful time. I think it was just a huge success.”

Sixty-nine vendors showed up downtown, Comer said; many of them had been participants in the weekend’s Daniel Boone Festival in Barbourville.

But not all of them were Boone folks. Richard Adams with Wooden Tricks of London brought his lathe and went to work making wooden bowls in Nibroc Park.

Adams has been carving for six years, but rarely is seen at area events.

“I do a few festivals, but I mostly wholesale and then also, for Christmas gifts, people will give me a call,” Adams said.

His work can be found at Loghouse Gallery and The Artisans Center in Berea.

In addition to the wood carving demonstration, there was also wool spinning, jewelry makers, and, of course, food. The Elks Club provided a burger lunch and the Lion’s Club sold funnel cakes.
