About 14 Girl Scouts, many in brown T-shirts accented with pink ribbons that read “Fight like a girl,” served meals to cancer survivors and their families Thursday.
Girl Scouts from Troops 215 and 247 were among the volunteers at the Cancer Survivor Dinner at the Corbin Technology and Community Activities Center.
Anna Jones, assistant director and outreach education coordinator for the Southern Kentucky Area Health Education Center, said the dinner aims to honor survivors and their families who have endured so much.
While past dinners have centered on breast cancer survivors, Jones said this year’s dinner was opened to survivors of other forms of cancer.
The evening featured awards, entertainment and speakers.
In addition to the Girl Scouts, Jones said other volunteers came from hospitals, health departments and churches.
Whitney Allen, 29, of Girl Scout Troop 215, said it was the first year for both troops to volunteer at the event.
Mechelle Mayo, 40, of Girl Scout Troop 247, was the one who suggested the Girl Scouts volunteer at the event.
“They love doing stuff like this anyway,” Mayo said.
