A hero's welcome home

Family hosts surprise reunion party after soldier returns from Iraq

By Becky Manley / Staff Writer

After spying her uncle, Casey Patrick, across a crowded room, Kayleen Bailey, 4, ran into his arms where she was scooped up into a big hug.

The emotional reunion was one of many Patrick enjoyed Saturday during a reunion party at Park Hill Baptist Church.

About 75 family members and friends were expected to attend the party for Patrick who returned to the U.S. in September after a year-long deployment to Iraq.

Patrick is a member of the 118th Army 1st Infantry Division based at Fort Riley, Kansas.

While he was in Iraq, Patrick served as a heavy equipment mechanic, according to Shirley Casey, 56, his aunt.

While deployed, Patrick stayed in touch with his family, including his wife, Katheryne Patrick, 23, through e-mail and cell phone calls, Casey said.

Like most families who have members serving abroad, Casey said her family worried about Casey and he was often in their prayers.

“Well, it’s been really stressful but we were so proud of him,” Casey said.

Patrick learned about the reunion party Saturday.

“I was surprised,” Patrick said. “It’s going to be nice to see everybody again.”
