Several bulging trash bags, torn pieces of linoleum and one old couch rested in one of two large dumpsters at Corbin Speedway Thursday.
The dumpsters, which are attended by a crew of workers willing to do heavy lifting, are at the site for Whitley County Dumpster Days from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday at Corbin Speedway, 6194 Cumberland Falls Hwy.
Computers, couches and televisions are among the items residents can dispose of during the event, according to Tracy West, projects director for the Whitley County Judge-Executive.
There is no limit to the amount of trash residents can discard for free, West said.
Items not accepted at Dumpster Days sites are tires, batteries and roofing shingles.
The county has held monthly Dumpster Days events at various sites since September with the aim to reduce illegal dumping, West said.
“We have so many (illegal) dumps within Whitley County,” West said.
Officials have identified 24 illegal dump sites they hope to clean with a $327,387 grant from the state, West said.
Monthly Dumpster Days events will continue until August when the program will be reevaluated, West said.
