Jim Holbert, a Laurel County resident who ran for Congress in 2008 against Republican incumbent Hal Rogers, filed his candidacy Jan. 8 as a Democrat seeking the 5th US Congressional District.
Holbert received 16 percent of the vote as an Independent against Rogers in the 2008 general election and announced his repeat 2010 candidacy for the Congressional seat soon afterward, re-registering as a Democrat.
The primary is May 18th.
Holbert has called for an immediate end to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a national energy plan to end American dependence on foreign oil.
“My campaign is about common sense solutions for our regional and national problems, facing the truth about our situation at home and abroad, and providing an alternative to the ‘business as usual’ politics that have caused the current crisis in America,” Holbert said.
Holbert, who resides with his family in Laurel County, is a former Army and Coast Guard officer and science teacher who works as an Emergency Medical Service helicopter pilot in southeast Kentucky. His campaign has a Web site at www.holbertforcongress.com and may also be reached at 606-862-9337.
