The first ever Dog Days of Summer flea market, dog show, chili cook-off and outdoor concert takes place this Saturday in downtown Corbin, and it’s not too late to sign up for the fun.
The morning kicks off with a community yard sale that will take place from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. along Monroe Street. Spaces are still available, and a 10-foot by10-foot space for your yard sale items is only $15. Space is still available. Reserve your sale space by calling the Times-Tribune at 606-528-2464. Sellers must provide their own tables.
Local contestants can also try their hand at one of southern America’s favorite dishes — chili. Contestants can enter in two separate categories — chili soup and hotdog chili. The food should be prepared before setup and will be sampled by festival passersby and judged by a panel of three judges. Contestants should prepare at least one gallon of chili so there’s enough to go around. Setup should take place by noon and contestants will be judged at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday. Prizes will include gift baskets and gift certificates from local businesses. About a dozen contestants had already signed up as of Tuesday.
Can’t cook a hot dog? Then bring your own “hot” dog down to Nibroc Park for the first-ever Dog Days of Summer Dog Show. Cost to enter is $5 per canine, and the contest begins at 1 p.m. Saturday in Nibroc Park. Categories to be judged include Best in Show, Most Talented, Best Dressed and Owner/Pet Look-A-Like. Each pet will have the chance to be judged for Best in Show. Other contests are an additional $5 per category. Prizes will include gift baskets and gift certificates from local businesses. Local businesspeople will be judging.
A two-man team, double elimination cornhole tournament is also in the works for this Saturday. There’s a $25 entry fee per team and a $400 first place grand prize. Twenty teams need to register in order for the event to take place, and as of Wednesday, there were not yet enough teams registered.
Stick around Saturday evening for the third Meet Me Downtown concert at the lot at the corner of Main and Monroe, where Stairway II Zeppelin will be performing.
Registration deadlines for the yard sale and the contests have been extended through Friday. For more information, call the Times-Tribune at 606-528-2464.
