Cookoff competition planned for B’ville

CORBIN —

CORRECTION - posted March 20, 2013 - Due to a reporter’s error, the Memorial Day weekend was listed on Page 1A of a Times-Tribune story on Barbourville’s planned barbecue cookout competition as “May 31-June 1.” The Memorial Day weekend is celebrated this year on May 24-27, with Memorial Day falling on Monday, May 27. The actual barbecue cookout competition will be on May 31-June 1, as previously stated. We regret the error.

They don’t have a name for it yet, but the Barbourville Tourism Commission is starting a new event in late May and early June to kick off the summer season.

It is a barbecue cookoff competition, and is set for Memorial Day weekend.

During their regular meeting, Barbourville Tourism’s board of directors learned Monday the new event will be held on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1 at Thompson Park.

Tourism Director Denise Wainscott hopes people who like to fire up the grill will all get fired up to enter the competition and join in the fun.

“You hear people talk about who makes the best barbecue in town, or in the county, or southeastern Kentucky.  It can be a friendly competition that brings families, neighbors and friends together, and it’s just in time for Memorial Day, when summer activities start to kick in. We’re hoping to make it an annual event,” said Wainscott.

She added they hope to have a name for the barbecue cookoff, and more information on the event in the weeks ahead.

The board also looked at a draft of the commission’s temporary home page for their website, one of the proposals Wainscott said she wanted to do after taking over the position last November.

The temporary page features a big picture of Barbourville and Knox County’s signature event — the Daniel Boone Festival with a smaller one of the Tourism Commission’s offices. It also shows a map of the region with major roads and highways going into Barbourville and has links where people can click to for information about the festival, as well as where they can email information to Barbourville Tourism.

Designed and hosted by Excalibur Graphics, the temporary page also lists a number to call the tourism commission while the new site is under construction.

To see the temporary page, you can log on to www.barbourvilletourism.com.

Earlier this year, she said a new website and updating brochures were among two ways the tourism commission could use as a part of a new marketing plan for Barbourville and Knox County to the world and beyond. During Monday’s meeting, approval was given by the board for the new, updated brochures.

Wainscott pointed out a handmade quilt collection is now available for public viewing at the Tourism Commission office at 117 High Street. It features the work of Sewelline Marley Peavley, and will be displayed through April 9.

Before adjourning, board members agreed to hold their next regular meeting on Monday, April 8 and 2 p.m.
