Traffic bottlenecks, faded highway striping and intersections with blind spots are among the traffic woes the state wants to learn about from Corbin’s drivers and pedestrians.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is conducting a Small Urban Area Study within Corbin’s city limits to learn about potential problems that could be remedied with quick, cost-efficient fixes, highway officials said.
Typically the Kentucky Transportation Department relies upon crash reports and traffic volume studies when identifying needed projects; however, for this study, highway officials said they want input from local people who use the city’s roads and sidewalks frequently.
People can complete the online survey through March 15, according to Jonathan Dobson, public information officer for Department of Highways District 11.
“We’re encouraging folks to take the survey and send it on to someone else they know in the community,” Dobson said.
Projects generated from the study will focus on state and federal roads in the city limits, but information might also be gathered on local roads, according to Tonya Higdon, transportation engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Division of Planning.
Any information on local roads will be forwarded to those government entities that oversee them, Higdon said.
State roads within Corbin’s city limits include KY 312, or Gordon Hill Road and Masters Street as well as KY 3041, or the Corbin Bypass.
Higdon said it will take at least a year to finish the study and generate a report from it.
