Goldbug holds annual music gathering

CORBIN — By Megan Williamson / Staff Writer

The sounds of pre-Bluegrass music resonated from the hills of Goldbug Saturday morning.

The sounds were delivered by local musicians who played mostly string instruments to around 100 people at the 4th annual Old Time Music Gathering at the Whitley County Extension Agency.

Instruments including banjos, guitars, fiddles and even spoons brought strangers and friends together, emanating a sound that reminded listeners of their down-home roots.

Also featured at the festival were locally grown honey, homemade barbecue sauce, planks from a cedar tree for grilling and fresh vegetables and fruit that filled the air with sweet fragrances.

The music, called pre-Bluegrass by experts like co-sponsor Richard Mandell, is said to be less commercialized, often improvised in comparison to a more modern Bluegrass genre.
