Times-Tribune Staff Report
Runners and walkers from around the area will converge on downtown Corbin Saturday to participate in the Inaugural Jack-O-Lantern Jog, a four-mile event sponsored by the Falls Road Runners running club.
Bill Hanson, race chairman, said more than 150 people have pre-registered for the event.
“This is the second run/walk we’ve put on since the running club started,” Hanson explained. “The Jack-O-Lantern Jog really has something for everyone.”
The club’s first race was the Moonbow Mile in September.
The course is flat and fast which is beneficial to walkers and competitive runners alike. Hanson said the flat course will be easy on individuals who aren’t in top physical condition and will allow racers to log strong times at the finish line. The event begins at the corner of Kentucky Avenue and Monroe Street in downtown Corbin and travels south on Kentucky Avenue onto South Main, past Hamlin and Kersey, the Peach Corner and Whayne Supply, before turning around just before the ramp to the Corbin bypass. Participants will then follow the same route back, finishing on Main Street in downtown Corbin.
Drivers are asked to use caution during the race and watch for runners.
“We have had outstanding support from sponsors of the Jack-O-Lantern Jog,” Hanson said. “Thanks to their generosity, we have some really nice age-group medals as well as prizes for our top male and female runners. The goodie bag alone is worth the entry fee.”
Everyone who pre-registered for the race will receive a goodie bag. Race-day goodie bags will be available while supplies last.
Falls Road Runners is a non-profit running club based in Corbin but open to runners throughout the area. Club members get together for regular training runs as well as community service projects. They have cleaned up trash along roads and participated in the Corbin/Knox-Whitley counties March of Dimes march for babies. According to the club Web site, Falls Road Runners will promote an improved quality of life through the health and wellness that comes from running. The club participates in three main areas of action: running; community service; and economic development in the Tri-County.
Anyone interested in participating in the Jack-O-Lantern Jog can download an entry form at www.fallsroadrunners.org or pick one up at the Times-Tribune. Race-day registration is also available and will begin at 7:30 a.m. near Whitaker Bank in downtown Corbin.
