Reising’s ‘Chasing Moonlight’ nominated for CASEY Award

Special to The Times-Tribune

Robert Reising, a professor of education at University of the Cumberlands and co-author of “Chasing Moonlight: The True Story of Field of Dreams’ Doc Graham,” has been named a finalist for the 2009 CASEY Award.

A biography accounting the story of international icon Dr. Archibald Wright “Moonlight” Graham, Reising’s “Chasing Moonlight,” co-authored with Brett Friedlander, was released April 1, and has continued to receive favorable reviews through the year.

The biography focuses on Archibald Graham from his time as a youth spent with his younger brother, Frank Porter Graham, to his rise in baseball stardom. Dick Vitale, an ESPN college basketball analyst and Tampa Bay Rays season ticket holder writes, “Chasing Moonlight is an inspirational story that shows there’s more to life than just swinging a bat. It’s awesome baby!” Nine other finalists will compete alongside Reising and Friedlander for the distinction of the 2009 CASEY Award.

“There are so many excellent books out there that I am just amazed by this. The nomination itself is truly gratifying,” Reising said.

Inaugurated in 1983 by Mike Shannon and W.J. Harrison, the editors and co-founders of “Spitball: The Literary Baseball Magazine,” the CASEY Award was the first award to honor the authors and publishers of the best baseball book of the year. Each of the more than 240 books that has been nominated for the CASEY Award is a substantial contributor to baseball literature.

The winner of the 2009 CASEY Award will be announced at the 27th Annual CASEY Awards Banquet on Sunday, March 7, 2010.
