Get out those worn shoes, shirts you’ve outgrown and the set of iced-tea tumblers your mother-in-law gave you.
And if you need shoes, shirts and iced-tea tumblers, head east on KY 80, for 22 miles to Manchester.
The 11th annual East 80 Yard Sale begins today.
Through Monday, traffic on the road is expected to be heavy with shoppers and automobiles.
Many of those living along the road into the mountains will have tables spread in their front lawns, burdened with the school clothes their kids have outgrown or just didn’t like, microwave ovens that were replaced by newer, fancier ones, car mufflers that were never installed, a bunch of books that were never read, curtains that were replaced with other curtains and maybe that collectible comic book for which you’ve looked since you were a kid.
Don’t forget to bring small currency. Sellers can give away all their money brought for change in just a few minutes in the early part of the days and be stuck with 50s and 100s.
And if you don’t live on KY 80 and have things like those above to sell, many of the people living along the road will rent a space for you to set up.
The average rental space goes for $8 per table or $20 for a larger spot.
There are also open spaces along the side of the road that are begging for someone to perch upon them and peddle their goods.
And roads leading off KY 80 often host sellers as well.
Once you set up to sell, put out some yard/garage sale signs far enough from the site to let drivers have enough room to slow, signal and stop. And mark parking spaces where drivers will know to park. And, by the way, give them free parking.
If you’re shopping, particularly near the side of the road, be careful. Remember the yard sale attracts a lot of traffic.
Drivers who spot a sale, but can’t stop in time, should go on down the road and turn around.
In all situations, be patient, make no sudden stops and use turn signals.
So, pick a place along the road from London, through Rough Creek, Lake, Lida, Freedom, Bush and even Pigeon Roost on your way to Manchester to find treasures, fond memories and other brick-brack.
