Memory of Bark Camp should be revived

The Times-Tribune

CORBIN — I am the grandson of George H. Earls who was born in Bark Camp in Whitley County in 1857. His father, Thomas Earls, settled there in 1812. My father, Rev. Maynard 0. Earls, was raised in Whitley County. The town of Bark Camp Mills disappeared during the Great Depression. I’d like to revive its memory. I am also a published author, historian and professor at Wilmington College in Ohio.

I am currently researching the history of Bark Camp and its people. I hope some of the folks in Whitley County and the surrounding area may be able to help me. I am interested in gathering any stories, family histories and early pictures from that area. All original materials will be copied and returned to the owners.

I would also like to locate the two old cemeteries that served the community. I was last there 40 years ago and have been informed that their location has been lost to time.

  • Disturbing trend of hyperbole in media, politics

    There is a disturbing trend of absolute hyperbole on the part of news media and political speakers. What I’m talking about is the immediate use of top shelf words like “dictator,” “fascist,” “communist,” and this really has to stop.
