On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Corbin High School Band hosted the Cumberland Falls Marching Invitational marching band competition at Campbell Field. Twelve bands from southeastern Kentucky came to compete in our competition. For this event to be a success, it required cooperation of many area businesses and groups.
The Corbin High School Marching Band and Corbin Band Boosters would like to thank the Corbin Independent school board. Superintendent Ed McNeel, Corbin High School administration, John Derek Faulconer, Principal, Thorn Smith, Athletic Director, Coach Steve Jewell, the Music Alumni Association and the community for their cooperation, assistance, and support in hosting this event.
We would like to thank Mayor Willard McBurney, City Manager Marion Sams, Corbin Recreation Department, Corbin Senior Citizen Center, and the Corbin Police Department for their assistance in coordinating the use of city facilities during the competition. The Recreation Center and Old Youth Center was used for dressing rooms for the bands. Parking of equipment trucks and warm-up areas for the band was at Rotary Park. The Senior Citizen Center was used as a hospitality room for the judges and visiting band directors and staff.
Corbin City Police assisted in keeping Rotary parking areas and the streets leading to this area clear of traffic. This allowed the participating bands’ equipment trucks and buses access to these areas. Band students walk from this area to Campbell Field during the competition, keeping these areas clear of traffic providing for the safety of the numerous students participating.
Lt. Col. Rick McClure and JROTC students were in charge of parking the cars of those in attendance. They also assisted with directing traffic and controlled flow of traffic to assure the safety of the band members.
Many businesses assisted us by providing goods and services during the competition. Kat’s Eye Photography photographed each band while they were competing. Kathy Hoskins also takes pictures of our band during all the competitions this season. These photographs include students on the field during their show and behind the scenes. The photographs are a record the students will cherish in the future when recalling the good times they had during their high school band years.
Corbin Motorsports provided Polaris vehicles for use in supplying areas, transporting supplies, and directing the bands. Corbin Motorsports also has allowed us to use an all-terrain vehicle during the marching season to transport equipment to and from the competition area.
David’s Steakhouse and the Root Beer Stand assisted the band boosters in procuring food supplies for items sold in the concession stand. Dave Keck allowed us to use the large grill to prepare some of the items that were available in the concession stand. The Root Beer Stand donated chili and hot dogs for our concession stand that day.
The Band Boosters and the Marching Band would also like to express our appreciation to the residents in the areas near Campbell Field. The patience the residents’ showed with different routes, changes in parking and issues caused by increased traffic around their homes during the hours of the competition was profound.
Thank you also to the students, former students and parents who worked throughout the day. We realize without the cooperation of the entire community our efforts would not be successful and want to say thank you to our community, community leaders, school administrators, businesses, parents, supporters, and students for all of their help.
