Why is W’burg seeking to annex properties?

CORBIN — Annexation? Is this the solution to every city’s problem? The City of Williamsburg recently passed the first reading of an ordinance pertaining to annexation of right of ways along U.S. 25W to Ballard Ford Road at Exit 15. If passed, this obviously opens up the opportunity for businesses and real property owners to choose to be annexed into the city.

The question is, what is the City of Williamsburg looking for? Do they have “personal” business opportunities up their sleeve once the annexation is passed? As most know there are vacant properties up and down U.S. 25 north of Williamsburg that I’m sure will become potential business opportunities for maybe personal interests of the City of Williamsburg.

What real property owner would want to pay both city and county taxes if they chose to be annexed into the city? I feel the City of Williamsburg needs to first quit overlooking the opportunities they already have within the city limits. You must first take care of your own before looking for something else. The old saying “the grass is greener on the other side” may not always be true.

I must say that I’m proud of Croley Bend residents for voicing their opinion and standing up against the annexation at the recent February city council meeting.

The county has top-notch fire protection, law enforcement, and emergency service personnel that have been serving the communities for years with the most up-to-date professionalism. This is what we need to keep. City officials need to understand they can’t just take what they want. It’s no different than a kid taking a piece of candy after being told “no” by his parents. The only difference is that the kid doesn’t know any better, but the city does. This is my opinion and one I’m entitled to.
