Sewer overflow after heavy rains last weekend damaged four offices at the corner of Kentucky Avenue and Gordon Street and the city will have to pay for the damages incurred, according to Corbin City Utilities Commission General Manager Ron Herd.
“We had our main stopped up and it ran sewage back into the building with all that surcharge,” Herd said. “We’ve hired a company to come clean it up and we are going to pay for all of the damages.”
Herd said this is the second time the sewer has overflowed and caused damage at the site.
“In March of 2008, it was stopped up and we unstopped it,” Herd said. “We never thought about it happening again.”
Herd said the commission will put a back flow preventer in service so overflow will not happen again and an approximately $1 million sewer rehab project is being planned.
“I am going to have that line re-laid. The line between the manhole doesn’t look quite straight,” Herd said. “Apparently that line was slightly redone when the Masters Street overpass was put in.”
Sue Henson, an employee of Experience Works, said people contacted authorities after they noticed sewage shooting out the manholes and flowing under the office doors.
Forcht Realty President Anthony Grubb said biohazard warnings were put up until all the business owners could be notified.
Angela Smith, owner of Picture This Photography by Angela, said she was notified of the problem Saturday morning when she was in Hopkinsville. Herd said he isn’t sure how much the damages will cost the city until there is an evaluation. Herd was unsure how much it cost for last year’s damages, but the insurance company settled on it.
Workers at Experience Works are making plans on how to help their clients without a computer, phone system and an office.
Smith, owner of the photography studio contaminated by the sewage, believes she will be out of business for awhile.
“Everything needs to be gutted. It’s a mess.”
