CORBIN — By Carl Keith Greene / Staff Writer
A Laurel County man has been charged with first-degree assault and attempted murder after allegedly attacking his neighbor with a knife.
The altercation between the two men began early Saturday on Vaughn Ridge Road in western Laurel County, and resulted in a gunshot wound and a knife wound later in the day.
Sheriff Fred Yaden said William “Billy” Vaughn, 38, and Ricky Mosgrove, 52, had an earlier altercation, the circumstances of which police are not yet releasing.
Mosgrove reportedly went to confront Vaughn again that evening. Yaden said Mosgrove walked to Vaughn’s home, reportedly brandished a knife and cut into the back of Vaughn’s neck.
Vaughn then reportedly pulled a pistol and shot Mosgrove.
Deputies were called out to Vaughn’s home just after 7 p.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found Mosgrove with a gunshot wound in his leg. Vaughn had already been taken by private transportation to St. Joseph hospital in London for the knife wound.
Mosgrove was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center by helicopter.
Vaughn required 28 staples to close the wound in his back.
Mosgrove has been charged with first-degree assault and attempted murder.
The case is under investigation by Detective Tommy Johnston assisted by Detective Charlie Loomis, Yaden, Sgt. Greg Poynter, deputies Jason Back, William Harris and Joey Vicini, and London Detective Russell Baker.
