CORBIN — By Becky Manley / Staff Writer
New employee policies will soon be implemented at the Corbin Fire Department.
The policies, which were discussed at Monday’s Corbin commissioners meeting, pertain to tardiness, use of fire vehicles, visitors and washing fire apparatus.
Fire Chief Barry McDonald said he has spent about three months developing the policies and they will be enforced after he discusses them with fire department personnel.
Fire department employees who violate the new policies could face discipline or they could be fired, McDonald said.
The policies state that firefighters and officers must arrive on time and be ready to respond at the start of their shifts; that fire vehicles can’t be used for personal use; and that fire apparatus must be cleaned if the outdoor temperature is at or above 32 degrees.
The policy about visitors indicates each fighter is limited to two visitors between 4 and 9 p.m. and those visitors are not allowed in the fire station’s bedroom and engine bay areas. Visitors must sign in and out with the ranking officer, and their visits will be timed.
Commissioner Phil Gregory delivered an update on his fellow commissioner, Bruce Farris, who suffered a stroke Feb. 21.
Gregory said Farris is “improving daily,” has a good attitude and is taking speech therapy.
“We really need to pray for that boy,” Gregory said.
Other business discussed included:
—Mayor Willard McBurney signed a proclamation declaring April PRIDE Spring Cleanup Month.
—Corbin City Manager Bill Ed Cannon was authorized to obtain bids for blacktop to repair damaged roads. Cannon told commissioners he is still identifying areas that need work.
