CORBIN — By Becky Manley / Staff Writer
The Corbin Board of Education will appeal the state’s decision on the reciprocal agreement between Corbin and Knox County school districts.
The Corbin board voted in favor of the appeal Thursday following an about eighty-minute executive session during its regular monthly meeting.
In his decision released last week, Education Commissioner Terry Holliday ruled that only those students currently attending Corbin schools under the reciprocal agreement with Knox County will be allowed to continue at Corbin for the 2010-11 school year. The decision requires the districts enter into mediation before Sept. 1, 2010, about the 2011-2012 non-resident agreement.
Corbin Independent Schools Superintendent Ed McNeel said the appeal is needed because Holliday’s decision would prevent students entering kindergarten this fall who live in Knox County from attending Corbin schools.
Earlier this week, the Knox County Board Education met in a special session to discuss possible litigation over the state’s decision. After meeting for about 80 minutes in executive session, the Knox County board took no action.
McNeel said Corbin’s appeal would go the Kentucky Board of Education which has 60 days to rule.
Other business the Corbin board discussed included:
—The board voted to sell Corbin East, 529 Masters St., at public auction. Ford Brothers will handle the auction.
—Friday, June 4, will be the district’s last day of school. Graduation will take place that night and students will attend school on Memorial Day, May 31.
