CORBIN — By Becky Manley / Staff Writer
Shantay Barnett, 24, went shoe shopping with her mother Thursday only to end up chasing a woman police later arrested.
The woman, Crystal Gayle Broughton, 30, of Corbin, was arrested after Corbin police were called to Shoe Show at Trademart Shopping Center.
Shantay Barnett said she and her mother, Nancy Barnett, had been shopping for about 10 minutes when Broughton came into the store to return a pair of shoes.
When the store clerk told Broughton the shoes couldn’t be returned because they were wet, Shantay Barnett said Broughton became angry.
The store clerk walked to the back of the store and Broughton followed her, Shantay Barnett said.
“She (Broughton) was cussing and going on,” Shantay Barnett said.
The clerk threatened to call police and Broughton went on a “rampage,” Shantay Barnett said.
Broughton walked down an aisle, sweeping shoes and shoe boxes onto the floor.
“She was slinging stuff off the shelves,” Shantay Barnett said.
Broughton also grabbed boots decorated with glittery peace symbols from a folding table and threw them onto the floor, Shantay Barnett said.
Another woman who came into the store with Broughton replaced the boots on the table and apologized, Shantay Barnett said.
Broughton left the store followed by a store clerk.
“I followed her (the clerk) to make sure she was OK,” Shantay Barnett said. “I shop here a lot and she is a nice lady.”
A short time later, Broughton began to run away with the clerk, Shantay Barnett and Corbin police following.
Shantay Barnett said Broughton ran through Belk’s, exited the store’s back door then began to run up the hill to the adjacent nursing home.
Corbin police said they arrested Broughton behind the nursing home.
Broughton faces a misdemeanor charge of fleeing and evading, police said. She also had an outstanding warrant from Laurel County for walking away from court ordered rehabilitation, police said.
Broughton wasn’t charged with disorderly conduct because police didn’t witness her throwing the shoes in the store, police said.
Broughton was booked into Knox County Detention Center Thursday.
