League of Cities grant buys Tasers for WPD

Special to The Times-Tribune

The city of Williamsburg recently purchased four Tasers for the police department through a safety grant.

“We use every opportunity to make our city safer,” said Mayor Roddy Harrison, referring to the $1,587.52 that Williamsburg was recently awarded by the Kentucky League of Cities Insurance Services (KLCIS).

Harrison said that, in these uncertain times, grants are a way to make the city’s budget go further, as well as provide products that will enhance public safety.

“I want to thank Chief Wayne Bird for taking the initiative to apply for these funds,” he said.

In addition to Williamsburg, 131 other KLCIS members received safety grants. A total of $250,000 was awarded in this year’s safety grant program.

The awarded funds will go toward safety equipment, training, police car video systems, Tasers, and other equipment to improve public and employee safety, as well as the purchase of classes through the KLCIS Online University.

“Member cities are our stockholders,” said Sylvia L. Lovely, KLC executive director/CEO. “The success of our enterprise services allows us to reinvest in communities with programs like the safety grants.”

KLCIS provides safety grants to its members annually.

As Kentucky’s largest municipal insurance program, KLCIS provides a full range of liability, property, workers’ comp and other products to municipalities.

In addition, the Kentucky League of Cities offers employee benefits programs, financial services, training and education, policy and development, legislative advocacy, information technology and legal service.
