Hard economic times are driving some to steal just about anything — including railroad pieces.
An off-duty Williamsburg Police officer caught four people in the act of stealing rail on Friday afternoon.
Officer Bobby Freeman spotted four people near the CSX rail yard on Highway 26 trying to load a piece of rail into a vehicle. When the four were unsuccessful in loading the vehicle, they allegedly tied the rail to a vehicle and simply dragged it to a scrap yard that was about a mile away.
“They had two vehicles, one dragging the rail, and the other following it,” Williamsburg Police Department Public Affairs officer Shawn Jackson said.
Freeman followed the vehicles to a nearby scrap yard.
Jackson said Freeman confronted the individuals at the scrap yard before they were able to attempt to sell the rail.
Several other Willamsburg officers were called to the scene and Brenda J. Harmon, 57, of Williamsburg, Eric Brooks, 21, of Rockholds, Janie Lawson, 52, of Tunnel Hill, Ga. and Carl Moses, 51, of Williamsburg were all arrested without incident and lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
All four were charged with theft by unlawful taking over $300 and third-degree criminal trespassing.
Jackson said the missing rail didn’t pose a danger to anyone because it wasn’t being used at the time.
“It wasn’t actually in use at the time, it was extra rail that they had stored,” Jackson said.
