Special to The Times-Tribune
In recognition of National Public Lands Day and in honor of new citizens of the United States, the Daniel Boone National Forest is waiving fees at recreation areas in several Kentucky counties. For an entire weekend, no fees or permits will be required at selected locations.
The 2008 NPLD is Saturday. This special day was established to encourage citizen stewardship and visitation to public lands managed by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Interior through volunteer projects and fee-free recreation opportunities.
In addition to free recreation on NPLD, fees will be waived on Sunday in honor of our nation’s new citizens. This interagency initiative, called “This Land is Your Land,” was first presented on Ellis Island in July. Fees will be waived for all visitors, not just for new Americans.
In McCreary County, no fees will be required for public use at the Natural Arch Scenic Area or at the Appletree Shooting Range on Saturday and Sunday. The Keno Shooting Range in Pulaski County is free for use during the same time.
Beginning Friday, campers and horseback riders can enjoy two free nights of camping (on Friday and Saturday nights) at the Barren Fork Horse Camp in McCreary County. On the same two nights in the Red River Gorge, within the counties of Menifee, Powell and Wolfe, no permit will be required for backcountry campers on national forest lands.
On Saturday and Sunday, off-highway vehicle riders will enjoy free use of the Redbird Crest Trail in Clay and Leslie counties and at the White Sulphur OHV Trail in Bath County. All riders must stay on trails designated for motorized use.
For boaters during the fee-free weekend, no fee or permit will be required for boat launching at any ramp on Laurel River Lake or Cave Run Lake from 6 a.m. on Saturday through midnight on Sunday.
For more information, the public may call the supervisor’s office of the Daniel Boone National Forest at (859) 745-3100 or visit the Web site at www.fs.fed.us/r8/boone.
