Two businesses out of the four that were damaged in mid-April after heavy rains caused a sewer overflow at the corner of Gordon Street and Kentucky Avenue have reopened.
Brian’s Sports Cards Corner and Picture This Photography by Angela are back in business after 11 weeks of cleaning by ServPro. The total cost of the clean-up was close to $63,000, according to City Utilities Commission General Manager Ron Herd.
“We don’t have all the claims from the insurance, but I know the cleanup was about $63,000. That’s the part we paid, but the insurance company has re-imbursed us,” Herd said. “There is a $5,000 liability deductible which is what the city will have to pay.”
Herd said he doubts the claim will make the city’s insurance rates go up.
“I don’t think they will go up very much. It’s not considered a huge loss like a tornado. We have had similar losses in the past and they didn’t go up.”
Sports Cards Corner owner Brian Britton said he was happy with the cleanup.
“It looks very good, better than before, They took care of all the damage.”
Angela Smith who owns the photography business that was damaged was happy with the clean-up, but not the long wait.
“It just took a lot longer than anticipated. We kept basically getting the run-around. They told us it would take ten days, but we were basically without anything for almost three months,” Smith said. “We still don’t have all of our stuff back yet either. Today is my first day back and I can only do outdoor photography, not indoor.”
Experience Works and a drug screening business were also damaged by the sewer overflow and have not reopened in the same location. The two offices are up for rent.
Heavy rains caused the main sewer line to overflow. People contacted authorities after seeing raw sewage shooting out of manholes and flowing under the office doors. This was the second time in three years that businesses were damaged by sewage overflow.
