London lowers property tax rates

CORBIN — By Carl Keith Greene / Staff Writer

London’s city council voted Tuesday night to lower the city’s real and personal property tax rates.

Noting that the city has increased its income from its recycling program Mayor Troy Rudder suggested that the city decrease its tax rates by .006 cents per $100 in value.

That would drop the real property taxes from .096 cents to .090 per $100 value and the personal property tax rate from .1028 cents per $100 to .0968 per $100.

Following the vote to approve the change, the council approved the first reading of the city’s ordinance setting the tax rates.

Rudder said, “we have a unique situation,” noting that the income from the recycling program, as well as a decrease in garbage tipping fees at the dump, as a result of recycling.

Taxes are due before or on Dec. 1, 2010.

In other business the council approved a permit for a 5K run to be sponsored by Body of Stone gymnasium. The proceeds for the run in downtown on Oct. 30, will go to the Laurel County Schools Youth and Family Resource Centers, said Amber Stone, manager of the gymnasium.

The run will begin at the gym, go to Maple Street north then turn south to Dixie Street and return north again to Maple Street.

The run is 3.1 miles and will begin at 8 a.m. that Saturday.

A World Chicken Festival Parade permit was approved for 2 p.m. on Sept. 25.

The city approved the application from Larry Corum for Federal Aviation Administration money to invoke the airport’s five-year plan for a total of $237,000.

The council also agreed to advertise for bids for a bailer for the recycle center to be bought with $197,000 from a state grant.

And the council’s school resource officer contract with the school board was approved. Kentucky State Police Lt. Curtis O’Bannon was appointed to the 911 dispatch board of directors and Dane Gilpin was re-appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission.
