KNOX COUNTY —
Five people were reportedly killed in a two-vehicle crash on US 25E near Flat Lick on Christmas Eve.
Winston Gregory, of Pineville, witnessed the crash.
“That guy in the Ford station wagon — he was drunk or something — he was driving all over the road from down in Pineville,” Gregory said. “And then once he got here, he went left, right into the median.”
He said once he hit the narrow strip of median, the gray station wagon hit the ditch. “It went airborne,” Gregory said. “And it landed on top of that Nissan.”
Gregory said the driver of the station wagon, as well as four occupants of the Nissan, were killed.
“It threw him (the driver of the station wagon) out of the car,” Gregory said.
Kentucky State Police did confirm it was a two-vehicle crash and that there were “several” fatalities, but further reports were unavailable at press time. Trooper Joey Brigmon said investigators were awaiting a regional accident re-constructionist to review the crash scene.
Gregory said he began calling authorities once he came across the station wagon in Pineville.
“He came an ace of hitting me,” he said. “That’s when I tried to follow him.”
He continued to contact authorities.
“I called and I called and I called — three or four times at least — to keep telling them where this guy was at,” Gregory said. “I just knew he was going to wreck or kill someone.”
Minutes before the crash, Gregory said the driver of the station wagon hit a guardrail.
“I just wish they (the police) (would have) found him before this was done,” he said.
Both southbound lanes of US 25E were closed.
Several fire departments and other agencies responded, including Artemus Volunteer Fire Department, East Knox Fire Department and Stinking Creek Volunteer Fire Department, as well as Knox County Sheriff’s deputies, Knox County EMS and several units of the KSP.
