CORBIN —
Times-Tribune Staff Report
Longtime Sentinel-Echo Publisher Willie Sawyers has been named regional publisher with oversight of both the London paper and the Times-Tribune in Corbin.
Both the London and Corbin papers are owned by Alabama-based Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.
Sawyers takes the place of former Times-Tribune publisher Rob McCullough, who has accepted a position of publisher at the Commonwealth Journal in Somerset.
“Willie is ideally suited to be publisher of the Times Tribune. He knows this market well and has many close ties to the community,” said Eddie Blakeley, CNHI senior vice president/division manager.
Both Blakeley and Sawyers emphasized that readers will see few changes at each of the newspapers, which will continue to remain competitors when it comes to news gathering.
“He is fortunate to inherit a professional, hard-working staff and a management team that has a passion for the community it serves,” Blakeley said.
Sawyers began his newspaper career as a reporter for the Times-Tribune in 1980. His first management position came four years later at The Whitley Republican in Williamsburg. In 1989, he moved to London and started his own weekly newspaper, which was later purchased by CNHI. He has been publisher of The Sentinel-Echo since 1998.
“I worked in Corbin-Williamsburg for eight years and am looking forward to renewing old friendships, both business and personal,” Sawyers said. “I’ve stayed current with the happenings in the community through the newspaper and through my associations.”
Sawyers is the president-elect of the Kentucky Press Association and serves on the board of directors of the London-Laurel Chamber of Commerce and Leadership Tri-County, which serves Knox, Laurel and Whitley Counties.
“I plan on getting involved in the civic and community groups in the area and using the Times-Tribune’s resources to assist them in their efforts to make our communities a better place to live,” he said.
Sawyers has spent the last week in meetings with the Times-Tribune management team and has been implementing improvements that will enable the staff to better serve the community.
“I am impressed with the staff at the newspaper and look forward to working with them to produce a great newspaper and website for our readers and advertisers.”
Sawyers and his wife, Mary, have three children — Matt, Amanda and Lindsay — and five grandchildren.
