A new temporary license tag for motorcycles was presented Monday to the owners of London’s Wildcat Harley-Davidson by Laurel County Clerk Dean Johnson.
Johnson said in an interview before the presentation, more than two years ago county clerks from across the state came to meet in Laurel County. “People from Wildcat Harley came and they had this idea. They would like to see a temporary tag for a motorcycle that would fit the configuration of their license plate holder.”
At that point the temporary license tag used for automobiles and trucks were being issued for motorcycles and scooters.
Since then, the people at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet have been working on it and it was the idea of the people at London’s Harley shop, Johnson said.
Shane Richmond, manager of the London Harley dealership, explained that he had worked with temporary tags “of other states that were easier to use. So we took the idea and talked to Dean about it, went to some meetings about it. He took it and ran with it from there.”
To get the new tags, “there had to be some change in legislation because of the configuration of the size. The law stated the size that the temporary tag had to be,” Johnson added.
That was followed by the design phase, then the security phase. Once those phases were completed and tried and tested, “the security wasn’t as good as they expected it to be or needed to be. Because they don’t want them to be counterfeited. So they had to go back to the drawing board and do this again,” he said.
The tags are set up so that if they are attempted to be copied, the word “void” would appear. Once that was completed the license was ready to be printed and issued.
The first temporary tags, number 000001, was mounted in a plaque and presented by Johnson to Richmond at Harley-Davidson.
To be able to present that tag it had to be treated just as he would have had to do for one to be placed on a motorcycle, Johnson explained.
Tom Zawacki, commissioner of the Department of Vehicle Regulation, thanked Johnson for his work of “a couple of years on the creation of the making of this mini-tag, or the special motorcycle temporary tag.”
He added, “I understand we’re going to ride away on one of these bikes. Is that true?” To that came some applause.
He added, “To the friends of Harley-Davidson we certainly understand the pride that you share in which you ride.”
Paul Mauer, transportation’s administration coordinator, thanked Johnson and commended his work on the project.
Godwin Onodu, with motor vehicle licensing, noted that the new tags were teamwork and no one person was involved.
