A 44-year-old man was taken to St. Joseph-London hospital Tuesday after he was shot during a domestic dispute.
The shooting happened about 2 p.m. after the man, Paul David Vaughn, 44, defied a protective order and came to the home of his ex-wife, Connie Vaughn, 42, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department.
Police said they were told that once Paul David Vaughn arrived at the home, he entered it and threatened Connie Vaughn as well as two other residents, Cathy Burke and Jason Burke.
Three children were in the house at the time, police said.
The home’s occupants began to fight Paul David Vaughn while he was inside the home, but police said the struggle quickly moved outside.
Jason Burke told police he took the children to the basement while Connie Vaughn and Cathy Burke fought Paul David Vaughn.
Police were told both women fired warning shots before they aimed at Paul David Vaughn, who may have suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
According to Connie Vaughn’s mother, Martha Jones, 62, of Keavy, Tuesday’s shooting comes after a long history of domestic abuse by Paul David Vaughn against Connie Vaughn.
Jones, who was among the family members who gathered at her daughter’s home following the shooting, said the couple had been divorced about six months following a 28-year marriage.
Paul David Vaughn had violated the protective order before Tuesday and had repeatedly threatened his ex-wife, Jones said.
“They were scared to death of him,” Jones said.
Jones, who was not present at the time of the shooting, said she was told when Paul David Vaughn entered her daughter’s home he was carrying a crowbar.
Police said both Connie Vaughn and Cathy Burke were cooperating with the investigation. As of Tuesday afternoon, neither had been charged in connection with the shooting.
Police believe Paul David Vaughn did not suffer life-threatening injuries in the shooting.
