Corbin couple robbed at gunpoint

Driver of black truck wanted for questioning

By Samantha Swindler / Managing Editor

Corbin police are still looking for the man who robbed a couple at gunpoint Wednesday morning at the Valley View Apartments on Fifth Street.

The victims — a man and his ex-wife — were exiting a car at about 9:30 a.m. and about to head into an apartment when the suspect, wearing a ski-mask, put a gun to the male victim’s cheek.

“He stuck a gun to the side of my face, he started demanding the wallet and her purse,” said the male victim, who asked not to be identified. “I felt it (the gun) pressed right up against my cheekbone.”

The man said he never got a look at the robber, who was standing behind him with the gun. The woman, who was leaning over and getting something out of the back seat of the car at the time of the robbery, was able to give police a general description of the suspect.

“They said that he told them to get back in the car and not to look up or he would kill them,” said Corbin Police Sgt. Bill Rose.

The suspect then made off through a hole in a fence around the apartments and ran through a field on the other side, where police believe he had a getaway vehicle parked.

The suspect stole the man’s wallet, the woman’s purse, and made off with about $50, Rose said.

The victims weren’t injured in the mugging, but the woman was shaken and crying while being interviewed by police.

The suspect is a white male, about 5-foot-8-inches, 140-160 pounds, wearing brown overalls and a ski mask at the time of the robbery.

Police are looking for the driver of a small, black pick-up truck with a University of Kentucky novelty license plate on the front bumper that was seen speeding away from city limits shortly after the crime.

“We got two complaints that the small, black truck had run some people off the road traveling at a very high rate of speed on Fifth Street,” Rose said.

Rose said the truck may or may not be related to the robbery but, “we’d like to locate him for questioning.”

Anyone with information about the robbery or the truck can contact the Corbin Police Department at 606-528-1122.
