A North Corbin man was killed Saturday afternoon on Robert E. Cox Road when the minivan he was working on fell on top of him.
Larry L. Perry, 46, was reportedly beneath his minivan at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, apparently trying to free a wheel that was seized, when the vehicle crushed him.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Detective Charles Loomis, who investigated the incident, said Perry was on the phone with a friend when the accident happened.
After Perry abruptly quit speaking on the phone, the friend went to Perry’s house to check on him, and then called 911.
Perry’s cell phone was found still activated under the van, Loomis said.
Beneath the van, investigators also found a hammer and the scissor jack with which the van had apparently been lifted.
The jack likely fell, causing the van to fall to the ground, Loomis said.
Perry appeared to have been working on the front passenger-side wheel that had a flat tire. Loomis said he suspects Perry was trying to free the wheel that would not turn when the van fell.
The car, Loomis said, was in park and the vehicle would not roll when he tested it.
