Two-story Laurel home at Camp Ground mostly lost after fire

Times-Tribune Staff Report

A two-story home on KY 1023, west of KY 229 in Laurel County’s Camp Ground community, was mostly lost to fire Sunday afternoon.

Camp Ground VFD Fire Chief Steve Bruner said the alarm came in about 5:30 p.m., and three departments worked until about 8 p.m. bringing the blaze under control.

A clothes dryer left running while the home was empty may have started the fire, Bruner said.

But no exact source has been determined, he said, noting that the dryer was in the same room as a water heater.

Two rooms of the house were all that were left, he said.

Some 20 firefighters from Camp Ground, Laurel County and Lily departments brought the blaze under control.

The home was occupied by the Bruce Southerland family, Bruner said.

Southerland, Bruner said, told him he had been at a neighbor’s home for only about 15 minutes before the fire was discovered.
