Study could determine fate of mail processing center

London processing could be moved to Knoxville

CORBIN — By Becky Killian / Managing Editor

Mail processing could end at the London Processing and Distribution Facility depending on the outcome of a study by the United States Postal Service, according to David Walton, spokesman for the postal service.

The study will examine the feasibility of moving the London facility’s remaining mail processing to Knoxville, Tenn.

Following a study announced in December 2009, the postal service approved moving a portion of the London facility’s processing to Lexington. That change was effective July 1, 2010. This second study will focus on the remaining mail that continues to be processed at London.

When asked how many jobs might be impacted at the London facility, Walton couldn’t immediately report on the number.

A public hearing will be held in London before a decision is made, Walton said.

The study is expected to be completed early next year. If the move is approved, Walton said the mail distribution could be moved from London to Knoxville as early as February or March.

The London facility—which processes mail from ZIP codes 407, 408 and 409—is among 252 processing centers across the country that could be consolidated. Walton said the postal service has 487 processing centers nationwide.

The consolidations, in addition to post office closures, are among cost-cutting moves being considered by the postal service.

The potential post office closures include 131 Kentucky post offices.

“We’re just doing whatever we can to help our bottom line,” Walton said.

As of the end of its fiscal year this month, Walton said the postal service is projected to have a total loss of $10 billion.

The post office is also proposing changing its delivery standards. Currently, the delivery standard for first class mail is delivery within one to three days. Walton said the postal service wants to change that standard to two to three days.
