The Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats opened the season with a 61-51 loss at the hands of the Burgin Lady Bulldogs Monday.
The Lady Wildcats turned the ball over 28 times in the loss, something assistant coach Mike Hensley said would have to be remedied if the team expected to compete on a consistent basis.
“We cannot continue to turn the ball over like we did tonight if we want to be in ballgames,” Hensley said. “The girls know that the kind of night we had possession-wise is going to hurt us if it happens on a regular basis.”
Lynn Camp jumped ahead early, using a 12-6 first quarter effort to take the lead after eight minutes.
Burgin recovered in the second quarter, taking advantage of the Lady Wildcats’ turnovers and outscoring them 21-15 in the period to tie things up at 27 apiece by halftime. The Lady Bulldogs doubled up Lynn Camp in the third period, using a 16-8 third quarter showing to build a 43-35 lead with eight minutes to play in the contest.
From that point, the game belonged to Burgin as the Lady Bulldogs closed the game out by outscoring Lynn Camp 18-16 as time wound down, securing the 61-51 win.
Next up for Lynn Camp is a match-up with Knox Central Friday.
“We want to get things shored up and get back to playing the kind of basketball we think we can play,” Hensley said. “We have a big district contest Friday and hopefully we can get our kids ready.”
