A 21-year-old Laurel County man died Saturday night when he was struck by a car while walking across U.S. 25E in North Corbin.
Larry Daniel Sizemore died at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 25E and American Greeting Road.
He was reportedly crossing the street toward the ALDI food store and Taco Bell when he was struck by a car heading southeast, driven by Dusty Day of Corbin.
Sizemore was pronounced dead at the scene by Laurel Coroner Doug Bowling.
Laurel County Sheriff Fred Yaden said Day tried to swerve and miss Sizemore, running off the road and taking down guide lines to a pole carrying electric and phone lines.
The pole broke and the lines fell and encased his car, said West Knox Fire Chief Darrell Baker, noting that the driver was able to exit the vehicle on his own.
The falling lines put the area of ALDI and Taco Bell in the dark.
Yaden said evidence at the scene suggests Sizemore may have been drinking when he crossed the road, but toxicology reports have not yet been returned.
The incident is under the investigation of the Laurel Sheriff’s Department.
Sizemore was a 2006 graduate of South Laurel High School.
On Monday, his aunt, Pauline Smith, characterized him as “a great guy, everyone that knew him loved him... He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.”
She said his cousin had nicknamed him “DD.”
She added, “The world lost an amazing man. We love you, DD.”
The funeral is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Vankirk-Grisell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Corbin’s Stansbury Cemetery.
