Times-Tribune Staff Report
Two men who were reportedly approaching London homeowners for driveway sealing work were arrested Wednesday after they stole a gas trimmer from a Harness Road home, according to the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department.
Jamie Asher, 24, and Justin McQueen, 23, became the targets of a police search after the Harness Road homeowner told police one of the two men had knocked on his door while the other stole the gas trimmer from his garage, police said. The men left before the homeowner answered his door, although the homeowner was able to get a description of the two men and their vehicle, police said.
Sheriff’s deputies along with London city police officers began a search of nearby neighborhoods.
Police spotted the white Dodge Dakota truck in which the men rode in the driveway of a home in the Cross Keys subdivision. The gas trimmer was found in the truck and further investigation by police resulted in the two men being arrested on several charges.
Asher was charged with third-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs, possession of a controlled substance, operating on a suspended operator’s license and failure to produce an insurance card, police said.
McQueen was charged with third-degree burglary, public intoxication, theft by unlawful taking and possession of a controlled substance, police said. He also had outstanding warrants from Clay County.
Police caution residents that thefts are on the rise and can occur at any time. Police credited the homeowner’s vigilance and attention to detail for helping them quickly find and arrest the two suspects.
