Times-Tribune hires new reporter

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

The Times-Tribune has hired John L. Ross as a new full-time reporter responsible for coverage of the Whitley County and Williamsburg area, according to Managing Editor Becky Killian.

“We are definitely glad to have him on board,” Killian said.

His interest in newspapers began 25 years ago in high school, when persistence paid off with a part-time writing position at his hometown newspaper, The Bristol Herald-Courier in Bristol, Va.

Since then, Ross attended several colleges, working 13 years in the restaurant industry while attending school. In 1999, Ross graduated at the top of his class from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications.

After graduation, Ross returned to the east coast and worked in various newspaper positions in North Carolina and Tennessee, earning accolades with both states’ press associations. In his last news position, he was managing editor of a daily newspaper in Tennessee.

“I look forward to being on the front lines when it comes to journalism,” Ross said. “I believe in old-school reporting: My philosophy — if you could call it that — is that a reporter should be little more than a human tape recorder, recording the news from the source and reporting it to the reader.”

Ross’ great uncle began and operated a newspaper in Snowshoe, Pa. in the late 1800s and has family who currently work in the newspaper industry. “Newspaper has been a part of my family for a long time,” he said.

When not scouting for news, Ross spends time with his family and animals in Tennessee. He has four dogs, three cats and a couple dozen chickens. He also is an avid recreational camper.

“I am finding this area very beautiful,” Ross said. “Everywhere I’ve lived in this country has had something breathtaking about the area.

“I see Kentucky is no exception.”
