By Phil Meeks / Whitley County Extension Agent
The next Whitley County Farmers’ Market will happen this Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. or sell-out at the UK Cooperative Extension facility in Goldbug. This is 1/5 of a mile west of I-75 Exit 15 on Highway 25W. For more information, call 606-549-1430.
This week at the farmers’ market, local products will include basil, bell peppers, carrots, eggs, jams and jellies, okra and potatoes. Additional farm products will be there — from food items to fall decorations — depending on availability.
SECOND SUNDAY ACTIVITIES
On Sunday, Oct. 11, counties across Kentucky will celebrate “Second Sunday,” a day devoted to encouraging citizens of the Commonwealth to embrace more active lifestyles. On that day from 2-4:30 p.m., a number of things will happen at the Whitley County Extension Service — guided walks on the new fitness trail, introductory Zumba classes, and informational booths on health and nutrition topics. All ages are welcome.
JACK TALES
Extension Assistant Melissa Bond has been working with David Sweet and the Whitley County High School Drama Club to bring Appalachian Jack Tales to the stage.
Performances are to be scheduled for the evenings of Oct. 8 and 9, with a possible “test run” at the farmers’ market prior to that. Please check back with us for more information.
MULBERRY BLACK THING
Charles Smith is a graduate student collecting folk tales about the “Mulberry Black Thing,” a bigfoot-like creature connected to the Gatliff part of the county.
He hopes to collect 100 to 200 stories so that he might study the variations and trace the origins.
If anyone has a story about the Mulberry Black Thing, please contact Charles at ikaruga1977@hotmail.com.
