A 4-year-old boy was found safe at a Corbin restaurant late Thursday afternoon after he had gotten separated from family members.
According to Maj. Rob Jones of the Corbin Police Department, the boy, his legal mother and a group of members of his family had gone to McDonald’s on the Cumberland Falls Highway (U.S. 25W).
Police say the boy’s mother, who he called “his Mamaw,” had legal custody of the child.
The group left the restaurant around 3:55 p.m., and the boy was left there. Employees called Corbin Police at 4 p.m., telling them they found the boy wandering around the property with his jacket off.
Officer Kenneth Proffitt went to the restaurant, picked up the boy and took him to police headquarters. Jones said police were able to make contact with the boy’s legal mother at 7:30 p.m., and that the parents were being questioned.
Police also contacted state Social Services, the Whitley District Judge who was on call, and were interviewing the boy’s legal mother. Jones said the judge awarded custody of the child to Social Services, pending an investigation.
