Ground was broken over the weekend for a new fire station in Canadatown, according to Woodbine Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief Rick Fore.
The department announced in July that it hoped to construct the fire station on a donated parcel of land by the end of the year.
On Tuesday, Fore said he’s hopeful construction will be completed within six weeks.
When it opens, the new Canadatown location will be called Station No. 3. The undeveloped land is located at the intersection of KY 204 and Elmer Walker Road, about a half-mile past Canadatown Market, toward the Redbird Bridge.

An anonymous donor gave the land to the fire department.
Woodbine serves the Canadatown area for fire and rescue operations, and has done so since the Whitley County Fiscal Court and the Kentucky Fire Commission gave them approval in November 2010.
Originally the area was served by the Western Central Volunteer Fire Department until that department closed in May 2005 when it couldn’t maintain insurance on its trucks. Afterward, Woodbine joined the Oak Grove and Three Point Volunteer Fire Departments in covering the area for a few years.
The new Canadatown station will be the third one for Woodbine Fire and Rescue. The main station is in Woodbine in Whitley County, located off KY 6 and KY 1064. A second station is located further up KY 6, past Route 233 in Knox County.
