House fire leaves family homeless

The Times-Tribune

CORBIN — A fire early Monday morning at this house on 588 Barton Mill Road, at the corner of Cecil Wyatt Road in Corbin, destroyed the structure and left a family of four homeless.

The owner of the one-story wood frame house, David Shumate, was in the home with his wife and two children when the fire started around 3:20 a.m. All four family members got out safely.

Kevin Gibbs, Chief of the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, said Monday night the fire was in three rooms and the entire attic space when his crews got to the scene.

Both Oak Grove and Woodbine fire departments put out the blaze, which involved 14 crew members and five pieces of equipment. Gibbs added the house was a total loss, with the damage estimated around $50,000.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
