Police nab man for bogus bills

Counterfeit money seen, used in Corbin

Counterfeit money has been cropping up in Corbin lately. But with the bogus bucks being passed in town over the last three weeks, the free ride came to a close for one man Thursday with Corbin police putting the cuffs on him.

Nicholas Campbell, 27, of Corbin, was arrested without incident Thursday at Gerry’s Trailer Park on the Cumberland Falls Highway in the city. He was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, and was jailed in the Whitley County Detention Center in Williamsburg.

Campbell was identified through video surveillance footage and from eyewitness accounts from two businesses — the Speedway convenience store and the McDonald’s restaurant, both located on Cumberland Falls Highway.

Detective Rusty Hedrick was assisted on the case by Det. Bill Rose and Capt. Coy Wilson. Hedrick is continuing the investigation.

According to Maj. Rob Jones of the Corbin Police Department, many local banks and businesses have seen “a rash of counterfeit bills being used throughout the city.”

So far, over 34 bogus bills totaling around $750 have been recovered from seven different businesses and banks. Officers continue to recover the counterfeit money on a daily basis, with most of them being $20 bills.

“But we did see a bunch of these $10 and $50 bills over a two-week period, along with the $20 ones. One counterfeit bill was found at CFM (Convenient Food Mart) on the Falls Road. Someone used the bill to make a purchase. We also received word from Whitaker Bank that they’ve received several of the counterfeit bills through their night deposit. The deposits were coming through what was received at fast food restaurants,” said Rose.

He advised anyone who thinks they may have come in contact with counterfeit money to contact Corbin Police at 528-1122.
