Times-Tribune Staff Report
Loose coal dropped by an unknown truck caused an accident that sent an 88-year-old driver to UK Medical Center Monday morning.
The coal truck apparently scattered coal that was piled too high in its bed as it passed through a 12-foot high railroad underpass on KY 26 in Faber Monday morning. The coal covered the roadway inside the underpass.
Sometime after the truck dropped its load, Glenn Cox of Rockholds struck the loose coal on the roadway and apparently lost control of his Ford Focus, striking an embankment.
The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement arm of the Kentucky State Police was notified of the incident at about 8:20 a.m. Monday.
The driver of the coal truck didn’t stop after losing the significant portion of his load and is being sought by law enforcement, said KSP Trooper Don Trosper.
Cox was treated by Whitley County Emergency Medical Services at the scene and taken to a nearby school, where a helicopter flew him to University of Kentucky Medical Center.
According to John Dobson, of the Manchester office of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, traffic on that section of KY 26 was routed around the location of the incident about two hours during cleanup.
