Lily man arrested after police chase

By Becky Manley / Staff Writer

A Lily man who eluded police after leading them on a 30 minute police chase Wednesday was in police custody Thursday afternoon, according to the Corbin Police Department.

The man, Layton Champlin, 44, is the son-in-law of Johnny Dale Marcum, 48, also of Lily, who was arrested Thursday morning at Kroger, 14889 N. U.S. 25 East, Corbin, police said.

A Kroger store manager called police before 9:30 a.m. Thursday and said he had detained Marcum for shoplifting, police said.

After police arrested Marcum, they searched his car and found ingredients needed to manufacture methamphetamine in a backpack in his car.

Marcum was arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance and possession of methamphetamine precursors, police said. He was taken to Knox County Jail.

The police chase Wednesday began after police received a report of a drug deal happening at Sonic, police said. When police arrived at Sonic, Champlin drove away and police pursued him for about 30 minutes, police said.

Champlin abandoned his car in a ditch along KY 1223 in Lily and fled on foot into the woods, police said.

Police said they found what is believed to be methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in Champlin’s car.

Champlin eluded police until he was taken into custody in Laurel County Thursday afternoon.
